Restore the Symmetry and Balance of Your Smile with Gum Contouring
Are you unhappy with your gum line? Gum contouring is a practical way to reshape an uneven gum line to enhance the appearance of your teeth and gums. Dental Associates of Hoboken has helped many patients achieve a harmonious balance between the gums and teeth with gum reshaping or gingivoplasty. You, too, can enhance your gum line by scheduling an appointment with Drs. Bari Posner, Anum Ali and Giancarlo Brezillion.
When should you have gum contouring?
Although gums may not be the stars of your smile, they are vital in enhancing the appearance of your teeth and overall smile. Sometimes, you may have an uneven gum line or gingival tissues that become prominent when smiling. This unevenness or unusual protrusion may detract from an otherwise pleasant smile. In such cases, gum contouring removes excess gum tissue to correct a gummy smile or reshape the gum line to achieve an optimal gum-to-tooth ratio.
Although gum contouring is mainly cosmetic, sometimes correcting damage after gum disease becomes a clinical requirement. Some periodontal complications can’t be resolved with non-surgical treatments like antibiotics and deep teeth cleaning alone. The doctor may suggest advanced treatments like pocket reduction surgery or regeneration; gum contouring is often part of these periodontal treatments.
What does the gum contouring procedure involve?
Gum reshaping is an in-office procedure administered by a periodontist or trained dentist. The procedure only takes a few minutes and can be completed in one visit. Even better, gum contouring is considered a permanent procedure because your gums won’t grow back.
Traditionally, the doctor would use a scalpel to trim the excessive gum tissue and then stitch the area to kickstart healing. While the traditional cut-and-sew technique works, it’s invasive and leads to prolonged recovery.
Instead of scalpels and sutures, Drs. Posner, Ali and Giancarlo use laser technology to administer gingival sculpting. After numbing your mouth with anesthesia, the dentist uses a focused beam of light (laser) to remove excess gum tissue and reshape the gum line. The dentist may remove a small amount of bone on each tooth root where necessary.
Laser gum contouring is preferable to traditional surgery because it’s fast, less traumatic, and yields minimal side effects. The treatment vaporizes tissue rather than cutting. Because of its conservative nature, patients can immediately resume their everyday activities.
