I Need a Filling. Which Is Best? | Hoboken Dentist

When it’s time to visit the dentist and you find out that you need a filling, it’s never a good feeling to have. Not only have you not taken care of your teeth well, but now you need to have another dental procedure. Many patients are confused by what kinds of dental filling options are available but are dependent on many factors – the patient’s health, where and how the filling is placed and chewing pressure the tooth will have to bear.

Amalgam. Amalgam fillings are very durable, easy to use, and inexpensive when compared to other materials, so they are usually used to restore molars. Unfortunately, amalgam fillings are silver, so they aren’t as natural looking, possible short-term sensitivity, and more tooth structure is removed to conform the filling.

Composite. Composite fillings are natural-looking, durable and provide good resistance against fracture in small to medium restorations where there is moderate chewing pressure. Because less tooth structure is removed when using a composite, a smaller filling can be used than one using amalgam. They are moderately more expensive than amalgam depending on the size of the filling and procedure time is generally longer, and they tend to stain and discolor over time.

Ionomers. Ionomers, on the other hand, are made out of a mixture of acrylic acids and fine glass powders. Ionomers are usually utilized to fill cavities on the root surfaces of teeth or in small fillings that do not require any chewing resistance since they have low protection against fractures.

Is Cosmetic Dentistry Vain? | Hoboken Dentist

No one wants to be thought of as vain, but in this day and age, a large stress is placed on the way we look. If we don’t like something about ourselves, we try to change it. We go on diets, we dye our hair – there is a myriad of options we can do to improve our appearance. Cosmetic dentistry is the branch of dentistry that mainly deals with the appearance of teeth. There are several procedures involved, like teeth whitening, teeth straightening, veneers, crowns, bleaching and reshaping. While it is true that cosmetic dentistry is “elective” in more ways than one, in just as many ways, cosmetic dentistry also offers plenty of benefits from an improved smile.

A better-looking smile helps improve your self-confidence and self-esteem significantly. This then makes it easier for you to go out, smile and socialize with other people. By helping you become more confident about yourself and feel more attractive, you have a much better chance of living a better and more positive life.

The word “cosmetic” always gives off the impression that the main, and only, beneficiary is one’s appearance and that it’s only done to improve one’s look. Though, as far as cosmetic dentistry goes, it’s not always just about esthetics, it’s also about improving your oral and overall health.

Not only that, but there are many other cases where cosmetic dentistry helps in improving the overall function your teeth. Those with misaligned teeth or bites often develop worse dental problems that may result in painful areas outside of one’s teeth and this is something that cosmetic dentistry can help with.

Porcelain Is Not Just for Tea Sets | Hoboken Dentist

When you don’t have a smile that you can be proud of, it can be cause for concern. Everyone should be more than happy to flash their pearly whites. If you have the need to give your smile a makeover, you’ll be happy to know there is hope – in veneers. Veneers are one of the most natural looking restorations in cosmetic dentistry, while also providing durability and strength comparable to natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers are fingernail thin shells that are directly bonded over damaged, misshapen or stained teeth. Still not convinced? Here are the reasons you should choose porcelain veneers:

  • They are stain-resistant to classic stains like coffee, tea, soda and smoke.
  • Porcelain veneers can improve multiple flaws such as stains, cracks, gaps or discoloring.
  • Porcelain produces natural looking results because the material mimics the light reflecting properties of the natural tooth.
  • The material is very durable, and the strength can be comparable to natural tooth enamel. If taken care of, they have a lifespan of 10-20 years.
  • Porcelain veneers produce fast and dramatic results, such as whiter or bolder teeth.
  • It is more conservative than a full crown, by persevering more of your natural tooth.
  • The shape, color and size are all customized just for you.

But, before you make your appointment, some things to keep in mind:

  • The shape or color cannot be alter once bonded to your tooth.
  • If broken, the whole veneer has to be replaced.
  • They can be quite pricey, costing around $1,000 per tooth.
