Your Child’s First Dental Visit | Hoboken Pediatric Dentist

As a parent, one of the first questions you should ask yourself pertaining your child’s oral health is “When do I take my child to the dentist?” The answer to this question according to the American Academy of Pediatrics is that children who are at risk of early childhood cavities visit a pediatric dentist by age 1.

Though it may seem early, good oral health actually begins earlier than age one. National studies show that preschool aged children are getting more cavities. To prevent early childhood cavities, parents have to find out their child’s risk of developing cavities.

The purpose of an age 1 dental visit is to learn about the overall condition of child’s mouth. This appointment will shape out the way your child will deal with their teeth as they get older. As they will learn about oral health for years to come, they must begin the process early.

During this visit, ask your dentist a multitude of questions pertaining how to properly care for your child’s baby teeth. Though they are baby teeth, and will come out, they shape out the way your child’s permanent teeth come in.

“A cup of green tea a day MAY keep the Dentist away!”

Researchers from Columbia University in New York suspect that antimicrobial molecules contained within green tea helps preserve teeth. Keep in mind of course that adding sugar to this doesn’t work.

Antimicrobial molecules called catechins present in green tear provide the benefit. Yasushi Koyama of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and colleagues looked at more than 25,000 Japanese men and women between ages 40-64 and found that those who drink sweetened coffee have more likely of a chance to lose their teeth faster than those who drink unsweetened green tea.

The Catechins found in Green Tea have been shown to kill mouth bacteria associated with tooth decay and gum disease.

Maintaining healthy gums and teeth is part of maintaining a healthy body.
